The TÜV certification of LASIK clinics and surgeons, which was initially proposed by the EuroEyes Clinic Group, is to be implemented by the TÜV certification institute in conjunction with the VSDAR (Organisation of specialised clinics in Germany for eye laser and refractive surgery) in Germany.
The EuroEyes Clinics will be some of the first clinics in Germany to undergo certification under the stringent quality guidelines which must be adhered to. All EuroEyes clinics have already for some time been adhering to the high standards set by the DIN EN ISO 9001:2001 certification, which is awarded by an independent institute to clinics setting high standards in patient quality and safety. The EuroEyes clinics in Hamburg, Berlin, Hannover and Leipzig aim to have their TÜV certification, shortly followed by the other EuroEyes clinics. The certification parameters drawn up by TÜV Süd in Munich guarantees a high standard in the surgical correction of refractive error using the most modern laser technology. The new TÜV certification has been implemented to act as a guide to the general public in helping them to choose the LASIK clinic and surgeon treating under the guidelines set to attain the highest levels of quality.
LASIK treatments are to date offered in more than 300 practices and clinics in Germany, as well as numerous cheap treatments provided in other countries such as Turkey. Objective evidence of quality and safety is important in order to provide clarity through this disorientating multitude of offers. The new TÜV certification will provide the highest level of certification obtainable encompassing all the most important factors in the field of LASIK surgery. The examiners from TÜV Süd as well as an expert team of medical specialists will be evaluating adherence to parameters such as hygiene standards, technical equipment, operative routine, experience of the surgeon and complication rates. The qualification and experience of the treating surgeons will assessed, requiring them to have carried out more than 1000 treatments in the last 5 years, from which at least 250 must have been carried out over the last year. Of particular importance is the fact that the examiners will be extremely vigilant to ensure that only the most modern diagnostic and treatment equipment and methods are being used.
EuroEyes always strive set the highest standards regarding the experience of their surgeons and their “state of the art” equipment. Under Clinical Director and CEO Dr. Jørn Jørgensen EuroEyes have only employed experienced “high volume” surgeons, who have to date carried out more than 40 000 LASIK treatments. In addition to this, the EuroEyes Clinic Group have world wide the most femtosecond lasers, and now offer the Wavescan preoperative assessment in conjunction with aberrometry or wavefront guided LASIK. This is an individualised treatment profile which enhances the quality of vision after treatment in ways which has not before been possible using traditional corrective means.
The new TÜV certification will clarify a previously grey area benefiting future patients who will be able to clearly see which doctors and clinics provide the highest standards of quality and care.
