LASIK (Laser-in-situ-Keratomileusis)

The LASIK Treatment
LASIK is short for "Laser in situ
Keratomileusis". It represents the most

modern, most accurate, and the safest

method of correcting refractive errors. LASIK
is
the worldwide preferred surgical method for correcting refractive errors, such as shortsightedness, longsightedness, and astigmatism. The LASIK procedure is also approved by the American Food
 and Drug Administration (FDA).

The Advantages of LASIK
A LASIK treatment offers an extremely precise surgical cut, a minimal risk of infection, a fast and painless healing process, as well as a good predictability of the treatment result. EuroEyes provides every patient with a customised eye laser treatment.

Who can benefit from LASIK?
Prior to every surgery, a thorough examination and consultation will be carried out to make sure that the patient is suitable for LASIK. Throughout the entire process, safety and diagnostics is absolute priority. A sufficiently thick cornea, and a stable stage of the refractive error are the basic requirements for carrying out an eye laser treatment.

Generally, LASIK is applied for patients that are:

  • shortsighted up to approx. -10 dioptres.*
  • longsighted up to approx. +4 dioptres.*
  • astigmatic up to approx. 4 dioptres.*

*Please consult us concerning your individual suitability.

The LASIK Treatment

  • Anaesthetic eye drops (painless / slight pressure)
  • Outpatient surgery without eye bandage
  • Total duration of the procedure (both eyes):
    approx. 25 minutes
  • Usually full vision the following day
  • Generally able to work after 2-3 days

Step 1

How does LASIK work?

Wellenfront Analyse

A thin corneal lamella/flap is prepared with the femtosecond laser.

Step 2

How does LASIK work?

Femtosecond Laser

The flap is folded back, and the the Excimer laser thereafter ablates tiny thousandths of a millimeter of corneal tissue, and thereby corrects the
refractive error.

Subsequently the flap is then replaced. The flap remains in place through capillary action and protects the treated area of the cornea.

Frequently asked questions, and answers

Is the LASIK eye laser treatment dangerous?

If you are suitable for treatment, the risk of complications is lower than 1:1,000. Wearing contact lenses for at long period of time can lead to more complications.

Is the eye treatment painful?

Due to locally anaesthetic eye drops, you will only feel a light pressure during the LASIK treatment. Rarely, minor pain can occur after the treatment and is expressed through tears and foreign body experience.

How experiences should a surgeon be?

As a general rule, the more experienced at surgeon is at a certain procedure, the lower the risk of complications. For that reason, it is advised that you choose a "high volume" surgeon for your treatment (which means that he/she performs more than 500 independently surgeries per year).

Is the femtosecond laser safe?

The femtosecond laser offers even more safety for the refractive surgery, and has significantly improved the precision in laser treatments.

When can I return to work?

The visual rehabilitation following a LASIK treatment happens very quickly, and typically the patient can return to work after 2-3 days. Sport activities can be resumed after approximately 6 days, depending on the type of sport. During this period, the patient can generally lead a normal life.

Will the acuity stay stable after LASIK?

In general, the acuity stays stable after a LASIK treatment. However, from age 40-45 and onwards, the eyes' ability to read will worsen, and you will need reading glasses.

Should both eyes be treated on the same day?

We never encountered any differences in the results or the complications of treating two eyes in one day versus treating two eyes in two days.

What should I pay attention to after a LASIK treatment?

It is very important that you, in the days after your LASIK treatment, follow the aftercare instructions given to you. In extremely rare cases, you can experience postoperative side effects, in which case you should immediately contact the clinic where you received the treatment.
