Step 1
Please wash your face thoroughly on the day of the treatment, and remove all makeup. You can eat and drink normally. Please bring the signed declaration
of consent, and eventually the examination protocol form your ophthalmologist.
We recommend that you bring an accompanying person.
Step 2
In case of a LASIK or Femto LASIK treatment, both eyes are treated the same day. Of course both eyes are treated with separate sterile instrument sets. In case of a lens surgery, the eyes will generally be treated within two consecutive days. On the day of surgery, you will once again be excamined thoroughly. Just before the surgery, you will be given a mild sedative pill. The eyes are anaesthetised with eye drops. The surgery itself, which is carried out in the sterile surgery room, lasts a few minutes and is painless.
Step 3
After the LASIK treatment, you may experience an itching sensation, a foreign body sensation, and inreased lacrimation. Additionally, the vision may be blurry. Severe pain or sudden deterioration of sight are highly unusual.
People normally become aware of eye laser surgeries through different channels, which vary from recommendations through LASIK treated friends
and acquaintances, by seeing reports on TV, in news articles or advertisements,
or through internet research.
With our available info material or by means of or website, it is possible to roughly determine whether or not one's refractive values are suitable for LASIK. Furthermore, we offer information evenings in our eye laser centres, and you are welcome to visit us any day and talk to one of our eye laser experts.
Generally, it is possible to treat refractive errors on patients 18 years and up.
The precondition for this is that the patient must have a stable refractive correction. This means, that the refractive error must not have changed more than 0.50 to 1.00 Dioptres over the last 2 to 3 years. Other than that, the patient should not suffer from eye illnesses, such as glaucoma, cataract, or retinal circulatory disorder.
Once the patient has been thoroughly informed of the LASIK treatment, the next step is an individual consultation, and an examination.
In a LASIK examination the patient's refractive error is measured. Shortsighted patients must have a refractive value between -1.00 and -10.00 dioptres to be suitable for LASIK. Longsighted patients must have a refractive value of maximum +4.00 dioptres, whilst astigmatics should not have a refractive error of more than -5.00 dioptres. In addition to the refractive values, the thickness of the cornea is decisive prior to LASIK. A special equipment (Orbscan video keratoscope) measures the thickness of the entire cornea. During the LASIK treatment, corneal tissue will be removed, and it is therefore very important that sufficient tissue is available. If this is not the case, the cornea risks becoming unstable after the LASIK treatment. By using the aberrometer technology, the individual characteristics (aberrations) are measured. Hereby, the refractive power of the eye is measured in 250 different points.
On the day of treatment, it is important that you do not wear any makeup or perfume. You should plan for a stay of around 2 hours with us. The entire
procedure looks as follows:
When you arrive at our clinic you will be greeted at the reception where all the initial formalities will be taken care of and you will get a chance to ask any
questions you may have. Subsequently, you will see the surgeon and have a personal conversation with him/her. A mild sedative will be offered to you in order to calm your pre-treatment nerves (not compulsory).
In the preparation room, the nurse instils the anaesthetic eye drops, disinfects the eye lids and the eye area. The total treatment time of both eyes lasts around 25 minutes and is totally pain free (slight pressure). Directly after the treatment, the surgeon examines your eyes, and you will get a check-up appointment for the following day. It is recommended that the eyes mainly are kept closed the first couple of hours after the laser treatment.
*in general
The actual aftercare begins a few minutes after completion of the LASIK treatment. The patient will be informed not to rub the eyes, and to keep them closed for the first 20-30 minutes after the treatment. The eyelids function like
a kind of contact lens, smoothing the flap onto the cornea, so that it adheres
like a natural plaster. After only half an hour, the flap is already so solid that it will not slide or fold. The patient is advised how to use the eye drops every half hour to keep the surface of the eye smooth, and protect the eyes from bacteria and viruses. Two types of eye drops will be used; artificial tears without preservatives (e.g. EuroEyes Tears®), and anti-inflammatory eye drops. The latter is antibiotic/cortisone eye drops, and are to be used preventively for one week. The artificial tears are applied whenever needed for several weeks. How often and how long, is determined by the treating ophthalmologist.
Schedule of the check-ups following a LASIK treatment:
1. First postoperative day
2. After approximately 7-10 days
3. After approximately 4-6 weeks
