Bioptics (the combined treatment concepts)

The term Bioptics refers to the combined surgical treatment that is used when only one procedure is
not enough to correct a refractional error. Hereby, high refractional errors can be corrected with an intraocular lens (e.g. ICL), after which a LASIK treatment "polishes" the cornea, making sure the
rest of the refractive error is gone. The interval between the two treatments must be approximately eight to twelve weeks. Combinations like this reduces the risk of stressing the eye, and greatly expands the spectrum of correctional possibilities. Bioptics is also suitable in case of a cornea too thin for LASIK. Another combination procedure is the AK-LASIK. In the case of a high degree of astigmatism incisions can be made in the outer periphery of the cornea in order to change its shape to the desired curvature needed to correct the refractive problem. About eight to twelve weeks later, the LASIK adjustment follows, lifting the LASIK lamella again, and reshaping the cornea.
