Cataract Surgery

Der graue Star (Katarakt)

Cataract

The cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens which mostly develops as a result of advancing age. Due to this progressing cloudiness, the vision will correspondingly worsen. When the light enters the eye, it is spread out, resulting in a blurred vision. The cataract can be treated with an outpatient surgery, in which the natural lenses are replaced by clear artifical lenses (intraocular lenses).

The Surgery
The eye is anesthetized using eye drops and a small opening is made in the lens capsule. The lens is pulverized using ultrasonic waves, and then sucked out (Phacoemulsification). A foldable artificial lens is then placed through this hole, and unfolds into the capsule sack that has been left behind from natural lens. The artificial lens is made of acrylic, and its strength is calculated in a way that it at the same time will neutralize any refractive errors. However, presbyopia can only be partly corrected with this lens, and in most cases reading glasses are needed after the treatment. The so-called multifocal lenses can be implanted to treat the presbyopia.

Der Nachstar

The Secondary Cataract

After a cataract surgery, the normally clear capsule, which holds the lens implant, can with time develop a fine membrane that grows over the lens surface causing a blurry vision. A small painless outpatient treatment can fix this by removing the cloudiness. This is done using a laser beam, and takes no more than a few seconds.
