Multifocal Lenses
Presbyopia
Presbyopia typically develops between 40 and 50 years of age. Suddenly the arms are too short when reading a newspaper or a book, and you can not focus on the letters - you need reading glasses. Even people, who have been suffering from shortsightedness or longsightedness since an early age, will eventually develop presbyopia.
The Function of a Multifocal Lens
Multifocal Intraocular Lenses (M-IOL) have several points of refraction, hence the term multifocal. There are two main refractive points - one for close-up vision and one for distance vision. The figure shows a multifocal lens, and you can see that the lens surface consists of af series of tiny rings with different refractive powers. Due to these rings, a smooth transition of light between distant, intermediate, and near focal points are created.
Painless lens surgery
- Anaesthetic eye drops
- Outpatient surgery
- Total duration of the surgery: approx. 10 minutes
- Both eyes are treated within 1-2 days
- Return to work after 2-4 days
Improved Quality of Life
A multifocal lens restores your natural vision and improves your quality of life, due to a general independence of glasses. Once again you can read, go grocery shopping, drive a car, shave, and apply your makeup without needing glasses.
EuroEyes has performed most multifocal intraocular lens implants in Germany.

Frequently asked questions, and answers
Can I, with the multifocal lens, live a life without glasses?
Clinical studies show that more than 90% of all patients who had the multifocal lenses implanted in both their eyes, have achieved a good vision-up close and far away. After the insertion of the lens, reading, shopping, driving, as well as shaving and applying makeup is, in general, once again possible without the need of glasses. However, if you use a computer frequently, you might occasionally need lightweight glasses for this particular purpose.
Which problems can occur with the multifocal lenses?
Multifocal lenses can result in a slight loss of contrast. This often causes halos around light sources. However, our brain learns to deal with such changes, and over time the affected patients will hardly notice them.
When will my eyesight be back to normal after the treatment?
Our experience show that you very quickly will obtain a good vision in the distant range. For some patients, the close range vision may need more time because they have to get used to the multifocal lens.
Will I be able to drive at night after the implant of an M-IOL?
Especially at night, glare sensitivity can occur, causing halos around street lights, or glare from oncoming cars' headlights. Because of this, multifocal patients should be careful when driving at night or in cases of reduced visibility.
Is it possible to get a follow-up surgery?
In case of residual refractive error, it is possible to treat this with the eye laser, the
so-called LASIK, a couple of weeks after the surgery.
Is the surgery painful?
Due to the anaesthetic eye drops you will only feel a slight pressure during the surgery. After the treatment, patients normally will not feel any pain.
Which problems can occur that I will not be able to influence?
Very often, a secondary clouding (the posterior capsule opacification, PCO) behind the new artificial lens will occur. This can happen several months or years after the lens exchange, and is very easy to treat with a special laser (the YAG laser), without having to surgically re-open the eye.
