Presbyopia

Alterssichtigkeit (Presbyopie)

Presbyopia has to do with the natural aging process of the human lens. The flexibility of a lens eventually decreases, and therefore an older lens cannot adjust to different distances as a young lens can (the so-called loss of accommodation). Until now, the standard solution to solve this problem has been reading glasses, which usually becomes a necessity between the age of 40 and 50. People who are already suffering from near- or farsightedness, will sooner or later additionally be affected by presbyopia. Farsighted patients will experience an even more reduced ability to focus up-close. Nearsighted patients, however, will need to remove their glasses to read, instead of putting on a pair of reading glasses. Bifocals or multifocals help patients with refractive errors, so that they will not need to keep changing glasses to see things clearly, up close and far away.

Presbyopia can be corrected with the implant of a multifocal lens. This will not only correct the presbyopia but also potentially existing near- or
farsightedness. A residual refractive error may occur after the implant of the multifocal intraocular lens. This can however be corrected a few weeks after the surgery by a LASIK laser eye treatment.
