Nearsightedness (Myopia)

Kurzsichtigkeit (Myopie)

The nearsighted eye is usually longer than a normal sighted eye, or the refractive power of the cornea and lens is too great. Incoming light rays are refracted in a way that places the focal point in front of the retina, and distant objects are therefore depicted as a blurry image on the retina. The longer the eye, the more nearsighted it is, and the blurrier the image is depicted. The optical correction of the nearsighted eye is achieved by reducing the power of the eye, so that the focal point is moved back onto the retina.

Glasses and contact lenses divert light rays before they reach the eye. In the case of nearsightedness, the correction value is indicated in minus diopters e.g. -5.75D. The LASIK treatment is also very successful in correcting nearsightedness. Correction of higher degrees of nearsightedness or thin corneas, can best be achieved by lens surgery (ICL or lens exchange).
