Cataract Surgery

The cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens which mostly develops as a result of advancing age. The is the most commonly occurring eye disease worldwide and can be surgically treated. The treatment follows two Steps. Firstly the eye is anaesthetised using eye drops and the bodies´ natural lens is removed (Phacoemulsification), then an artificial lens made out of plastic (acrylate) is implanted in it´s place.

CataractDuring Phacoemulsification a small opening is made in the lens capsule following which the lens is pulverised using ultrasonic waves, and then sucked out. A foldable artificial lens is then placed through this hole which unfolds into the capsule sack that has been left behind. The strength of the replacement lens is calculated so as to neutralise the eyes refractive error. In most cases reading glasses need to be worn after the treatment.

The secondary cataract

The Secondary CataractThis is a commonly occurring development after cataract surgery where the normally clear capsule which supports the lens implant can with time develop a fine membrane which grows over the lens surface causing a blurring of vision. This opacity is removed using a laser beam in a further treatment which takes only seconds, is done as an Out Patient appointment basis and is completely pain free.
