The Principle of an Excimer Laser Treatment
The excimer laser is a very precise instrument which is used to produce slight changes in the curvature of the cornea. It is so exact that it can engrave a pattern on a human hair! (see photo) Non-visible UV light removes tissue from the anterior surface of the cornea. This is similar to the grinding of glass to produce lenses. Gradually up to 0.1mm of the orginally 0.5mm thick cornea is removed. As a result, the refractive power of the cornea is changed such that the total refractive error of the eye is minimized.
