WHAT IS MACULAR DEGENERATION (AMD) AND WHAT ARE ITS EFFECTS?

The likelihood of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) increases with age .

AMD usually begins between the ages of 50 and 70, when the first visual impairments appear. You lose reading skills, face recognition and detailed vision. Blurred and distorted vision are the most common symptoms. Contours become blurred and dark spots in the field of vision up to blindness are consequences of macular degeneration because the macula (yellow spot) is located exactly in the visual center, in the back of the eye. The macula is the area of sharpest vision. There are two forms of macular degeneration – the dry (most common form) and the wet form.

HOW CAN YOU IDENTIFY THE FIRST WARNING SIGNALS TIMELY?

To determine the first signs of AMD, the simple Amsler grid test can be done. This test can be used as a supplement or as a first self-assessment. However, regular ophthalmological checks are recommended.

AmslerGrid

The Amsler grid test

During this test, you should see a grid of straight lines. A black point in the middle. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, leave them on for the test. You should look at the black point in the middle with your right eye first, then with your left eye.

If you see the lines broken, blurred or distorted, dark spots or the boxes in different sizes, please contact us. You can repeat this test regularly.

Regular ophthalmological checks are to be performed urgently, during which precise examinations can determine the status of the visual impairment. There are also risk factors to avoid such as smoking, high blood pressure and exposure to the sun. Genetic predisposition also plays a role. If any member of your family has AMD, there is a higher risk of getting it as well. Therefore, it is recommended that your mother, grandmother, father, grandpa, relatives take this test.

You should have a clear diagnosis made by an ophthalmologist.
