New service: EuroEyes China introduces screening for diabetic retinopathy

From April 1, 2020, the EuroEyes clinics in Shanghai and Beijing will offer a new service for patients: a screening of diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the retina in the eye due to high blood sugar levels and one of the most common causes of blindness in people between 20 and 65 years of age. Equipped with the latest OCT technology and OCTA devices from Zeiss, EuroEyes counters the increasing number of Chinese with retinal diseases.

The new OCT-AngioPlex device from Zeiss

Statistics show that every eleventh Chinese person has diabetes. It is predicted that 151 million diabetics will live in China by 2040. Any type of diabetes can cause diabetic retinopathy. People with diabetic retinopathy are seeing worse and worse. In severe cases, untreated retinal changes can lead to retinal detachment and eventually blindness. Dry eyes can also be associated with diabetes, which means a reduction in the quality of life for those affected.

Many patients know that a healthy diet and lots of exercise can help control blood pressure and blood sugar. However, most of them do not know that diabetes can cause permanent eye damage.

Using the Zeiss OCT-AngioPlex device, the EuroEyes doctors can now see and analyze the super high-resolution images of the retina and retinal vessels in a few seconds. It is a non-invasive eye examination for patients without contrast injection, which can detect certain fundus diseases at a very early stage and intervene in treatment in a right time, such as diabetic retinal apathy and age-related macular degeneration.

In China, EuroEyes initially offers the service in Shanghai and Beijing. By offering high-end service with the latest technologies, EuroEyes will help more patients with retinal diseases in China.
