Time to say goodbye to your progressive glasses

Progressive glasses correct the increasing presbyopia and at the same time myopia – distance glasses and reading glasses in one frame. What sounds practical at first can, however, cause many difficulties in everyday life.

Progressive glasses are divided into three zones: distant, middle and close-up. The side zones of the glasses cause a blurred image.

What are progressive glasses?

Progressive glasses bundle three viewing areas in a single lens, each of which is responsible for different distances. The upper area is responsible for the distant view over 2 meters. The middle area, also called the “progression zone”, corrects the view at a distance of 0.5 to 2 meters, for example the view of a computer screen. The lower area sharpens the view nearby, less than 0.5 meters, for example when reading a book.

Many progressive lenses have a narrow progression zone, so that objects that are viewed from the corner of your eye appear blurry or out of focus. The glasses wearer has limited eyesight and can only see objects from a certain angle. In addition, the side zones of the lenses are curved on the left and right and also ensure a blurred image.

Further disadvantages of progressive glasses

  • Solitary pupil movement is no longer sufficient: If you want to look into the distance, the head must be tilted so that you can see through the upper area of the progressive glasses. If you want to see something close up, you have to bow your head to see through the lower zone of the glasses
  • Due to various special features of the progressive glasses, the familiarization phase is significantly longer than with other glasses
  • Restricted areas of vision and thus restricted freedom of movement
  • Unsuitable for professional groups who have to work very carefully, for example architects, graphic artists or designers
  • Distortion of levels and lines in the peripheral areas of the glasses

There are various types of progressive glasses, for example panoramic progressive glasses for drivers (optimized for long-distance vision), progressive glasses for the workplace with a large progression zone (optimized for medium viewing distances) or smartphone progressive glasses (optimized for close-up distance) – but there is sharp vision not possible at all distances.

Looking at the cell phone and at the same time looking at objects in the distance? Unfortunately not possible with progressive glasses.

Alternatives to progressive glasses

With the use of multifocal lenses, sharp vision can be restored despite presbyopia. Age-related farsightedness usually occurs from the age of 45 and affects everyone sooner or later. The use of multifocal lenses is a first-class and safe alternative for correcting presbyopia. The natural body’s lens is replaced by an artificial lens (multifocal lens). The artificial lens has several focal points, making it possible to see at different distances without progressive glasses. These well-tolerated lenses can stay in the eye for life and are not visible.

Further advantages of a multifocal lens

  • Restoration of the natural field of vision, no restricted view, no step-like transitions
  • No more glasses – with the implantation of the multifocal lens, vision remains constant and does not change
  • An invisible lens, no more annoying glasses that you have to wear
  • Bow of the cataract with the use of multifocal lenses

Earlier progressive glasses – now glasses-free. EuroEyes patients report their experience with multifocal lenses

Many EuroEyes patients had to use progressive glasses for years and had to do their daily work. Sabine Dollinger reports: “As an anesthetist intensive care nurse, I have to be able to act quickly, every move has to be right. Progressive glasses were simply not a solution. Too complicated, too disturbing “Also, the site manager Roland Kluge was not satisfied:” When I needed progressive glasses 10 years ago, my everyday life became even more complicated. ”As site manager, Roland Kluge had to be agile, constantly able to look up, down and upside down:“ I am often on the move in chemical plants, where you also have to wear safety glasses. In addition, with my progressive glasses – it was exhausting. “He decided to treat himself with multifocal lenses :” Suddenly I was able to do everything that was previously so effortlessly. Suddenly I could see everything clearly, it was gigantic. ”
