TORIC LENSES – THE PERFECT WAY TO CORRECT ASTIGMATISM

In addition to an eye laser surgery, a lens implantation can be the right method for you to permanently correct ametropia. Patients over 45 years of age are usually operated with trifocal / multifocal lenses . If the patient has severe astigmatism, toric lenses are used.

Astigmatism is a refractive error like near- or farsightedness. This error is usually the result of an irregularly shaped cornea, which leads to light not being properly focused to a focal point on the retina. It causes objects at different distances to appear skewed or distorted.

WHAT DOES TORIC MEAN?

A toric IOL is a lens that has two different refractive indices that are perpendicular to each other. The shape of the toric lenses creates different refractive powers on the vertical and horizontal axes. This combination helps focus all of the incident light on the retina. The possibility of correcting astigmatism using toric intraocular lenses during cataracta procedure is a great option for patients suffering from both conditions.

Even high level of astigmatism can be compensated by the toric lens and the patient’s visual acuity is sufficiently good. In case of high astigmatism and insufficient visual quality with glasses or contact lenses, a lens implantation is recommended. The implanted lens is individually adapted to the patient’s ametropia, sits permanently inside the eye and thus corrects the visual defect constantly.

IMPLANTATION OF THE TORIC LENS

The implantation of the toric lenses differs minimally from regular cataract treatment. When implanting the toric lens, the axial position of the corneal curvature must be carefully taken into account so that the optimal fit of the lens can be guaranteed.

The optimal axis position during the preliminary examination is determined on the basis of various measured values. During the treatment, the axis markings on the toric lens are overlaid with the markings on the cornea. The artificial lens is rotated after the implantation until the match is achieved.
